Unable to Connect to the Network

  • Q: Type of module? A: TER-GX110S
    Q: Firmware version? A: 7.02.403
Q: Type of starter kit you have? none
    (S1, S1B, S2, S3, S4, EVK1, EVK2, none, other)
    Antenna: ANT-GXM602-FME/F-SMA/M

I have a pair of TER-GX110S modems with SIMs from Jasper Wireless for use in the United States.

I’ve been unable to connect to the network.

In response to at+cpin? I get READY.

In response to at+creg? I get +CREG: 0,2 which I understand means “Not registered but searching for a new operator to register to”

Technical support at Jasper Wireless tell that I do have the APN set correctly and that “The SIM cards are ready to be active on the system as soon as the modem makes a network request”

Are there any settings I can check and make to find out why these modems are not connecting to the network and to resolve the problem? Perhaps some default settings need to be changed for operation in the U.S. on the Jasper network?

  • Please be so kind update your user account. I will close this tread for now. Please email us as soon you have updated your user account. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

  • The band selection of the modules inside is for Europe maybe. We have GSM 900/1800 and you are living in the States. The States have GSM 850/1900.
    USA:
    http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/cou_us.shtml
List for the whole nicel globe:
    http://gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml
If you use the search function of this forum with key word
    - AT#BND
    - USA, States, Canada
then you will find some more user that forget to use the band selection.

Please use the SIM card of your mobile phone with your terminal. Please use AT#BND .... for selection of GSM band. Further details you will get at manual listed here:

    Your terminal contains a GM862.

    After selection of band you should dial AT 123456789;
Do not forget the ";" in the end of the line. The terminal will start a voice call. If you replace 123456789 to your phone number at office the land line phone will ring. If you pick up the phone then you will get a voice channel without to hear anything, because you own no microphone.
Anyhow, if this is working fine, then you can replace your SIM card of the phone to the JASPER SIM card. If you still have problem, then it is time to give JASPER a call.

    Summary:
    - First test voice call with SIM card of mobile phone
    - After that go ahead with data communication

  • Well that was easy!

Indeed the problem was with the band setting.

    AT#BND=3
    AT+COPS=0

    solved the network connection problem.

Thank you, and indeed I'll pass along recommendations for your products and support.

  • I opened the thread again.

    To mwilliams:
I am waiting for your recommendation.

    To Sam:
Please jump in here or just confirm that my hint by email to this thread was the right one.

  • Hey Harald.
Confirmed...So here is the issue again:

I was trying your simple example mentioned below:

With our microcontroller we issue to the GM862-GPRS the following AT
    commands:
    AT+CGDCONT = 1,"IP","internet.gprs","0.0.0.0",0,0<cr> (1-GPRS context
    setting)
    AT#USERID = "Ben Hoelke"<cr> (2-Authentication setting)
    AT#PASSW = "EASY GPRS"<cr> (2-Authentication setting)
    AT#SKTSET= 0,80," www.roundsolutions.com"<cr> (3-remote host setting)
For our convenience we store all these parameters with the command:
    AT#SKTSAV<cr>
Now we can activate the GPRS connection and let the GM862-GPRS module
    contact the server:
    AT#SKTOP<cr>

After that, the error was: NO CARRIER

    I checked the signal strength:
    at+csq
    +CSQ: 99,99
    OK

WHICH IS REALLY BAD. I have tried everything to get a signal but couldn’t.

The source that I am using is a 5v power supply. I have noticed one thing
though. When I turn on the S3 board, the leds on the main board and the
sister board keep flashing and the color is orange. Contradictory to the
manual, they say they should flash at start and then stop flashing.

  • I opened the tread again, because I got the question as below by email:

Question: Further to our development below, I would appreciate if you provide
    information on the following query.
We are currently developing a telemetry solution at our offices in Ireland
using both the GM862 Quad and GM862 Quad py modules for GPRS data comms. We
shall be deploying a system for evaluation in the USA and one in Mexico
within the next week. My question is, do we need to manually set the
frequency band to suit the USA frequency ranges e.g. AT#BND command, or will the module automatically configure for the correct frequency?

Answer: The AT#BND depends on firmware version. By older firmware you have to select manual always. By latest version it can be select automatic. I prefer to select manual, because the scanning on GSM bands is faster. You I would like to recommend, to write your software so, that you can work with fixed band selecting and automatic scan. Please note that in Brazil all four bands are in use.
BTW, what is you application? If it is a tracking device, then you have to think about neighbour countries too.
